Oscars 2017: the gentlemen, the costumes, the animation

Posted on February 27, 2017

The three favorite things I love about the Oscars 2017 are: the best dressed men on the red carpet, the winner of the Best Animated Feature Film and the winner of Best Costume Design.

My favorite stylish guys on the red carpet at the 89th Academy Awards were: Pharrell in Chanel, Ryan Gosling in Gucci and Ryan Seacrest in Macy’s.

Pharrell makes a statement in Chanel at the Oscars 2017

So Pharrell was my favorite appearance and the most surprising one at the Oscars 2017. But then again, he always makes a good impression and he stands out from the crowd.

Pharrell is wearing a Chanel custom-made black wool tail coat and trousers, look 71, from the Spring-Summer 2009 Ready-to-Wear collection with a white cotton shirt. He finished up his look with a diamond brooch, Chanel necklace, bow tie, belt, and shoes. And a special watch from Richard Mille.

His appearance is somehow of a statement because of the necklaces that we would usually see on women. But seeing as the world is turning more and more genderless and genderbending and the new generation getting rid of labels like “masculine” and “feminine”, his choice makes a good statement. Anyone can be who they wanna be. And his choice is maybe a bit edgy but looks very stylish to me.

Here’s Pharrell making Karl Lagerfeld proud AF!

Ryan Seacrest brings the white jacket in Macy’s

Miles Siggins has been Ryan Seacrest’s stylist for some time now so he probably styled him for the Oscars 2017 red carped where Ryan was working his magic for the E! Online interviews.

Ryan Seacrest was wearing an elegant custom RSD Ivory dinner jacket with peak lapel, embracing classic formal fashion with some retro flair. The jacket is from Macy’s, from his own collection: Ryan Seacrest Distinction – that’s what RDS stands for, in this case. I didn’t find this piece on the Macy’s website so it will probably be available in the Fall 2017 collection.

Ryan Gosling is a dreamboat at the Oscars 2017

Ryan Gosling made a good impression on the red carpet by wearing a Gucci tux, a custom Anto shirt and Christian Louboutin shoes. I love the Gucci choice but what made this outfit stand out for me was the Anto shirt with small dark ruffles. Details matter.

Everyone’s favorite modern dandy was styled by Samantha McMillen, as per usual. Gucci said on their Instagram that he was wearing a Made to Order black velvet one-button New Signoria tuxedo.

When it comes to winners, my favorite categories are:

Best Animated Feature

Best Costume Design at Oscars 2017

They should probably call this one: The Colleen Atwood Award because she was nominated 12 (TWELVE) times since 1994 and won four times – last night included. I wrote about her work for Alice in Wonderland here but she also won the Oscars for “Memoirs of a Geisha” in 2005 and “Chicago” in 2002. She deserved to win also in 2014 for “Into the Woods” and I still have a hard time forgiving the Academy Awards for this one :)) . She also did the costumes for “Lemony Snickett’s Series of Unfortunate Events” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. And “Sleepy Hollow”.

This year’s nominees list for Best Costume Design included movies like “Allied”, “Florence Foster Jenkins”, “La La Land”, “Jackie”… but my favorite, by far – and probably the most interesting, costume-wise – was “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, the Harry Potter prequel.

“I love the ’20s — it was a major time of optimism and change in America, before the Depression. . . a time of crazy excess in every way,” Atwood told Vanity Fair about her work on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

And here’s three memorable moments from the show, costume-wise.

First we have the ladies of the Jazz Age:

Then we have the gentlemen:

And then there’s the long blue jacket that made me want to buy it after seeing the first poster of Eddie Redmayne. This costume  – which can be worn an any give time on the street – is pure perfection!

Best Animation is Zootopia

The nominees for Oscars 2017 for Best Animated Feature were: Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle and… Zootopia which was the best fantasy of the year, after Fantastic Beasts.

So here’s the world that I would like to live in. Disney magic FTW!

This sloth is basically all of us on a Monday morning before having our first cup of coffee.

And the donut-lover-tiger is all of us, donut lovers, every single day.

So what was your favorite moment from the Oscars this year?
